McTominay is aware that he is surplus to requirements at United, but has to weigh up whether he wants to play in Italy
Manchester United have agreed in principle a £25.4 million deal to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli.
The €30 million move remains subject to McTominay’s agreement, but if it goes through the deal will aid United’s attempts to sign Manuel Ugarte from Paris St-Germain before the transfer window closes on Friday.
McTominay is well aware that he is surplus to requirements at United, who were previously in negotiations to sell him to Fulham, but has to weigh up whether he wants to move to Italy and play under Antonio Conte.
Fulham did not meet United’s valuation for the 27-year-old, but Napoli have made a breakthrough in negotiations.
Given McTominay is an academy product, the fee for his sale can be banked as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
It is understood that United have negotiated a sell-on with any future transfer fee for the Scotland international.
It is not certain that McTominay will leave and he was determined last year to stay on and fight for his place under Erik ten Hag, with West Ham United interested at that time, making 32 league appearances and scoring seven times. Ultimately United accept it will be McTominay’s decision and they will not force him out.
McTominay joined United at the age of five and made his senior debut in 2017. He has been on the substitutes’ bench for both the league games this season, coming on in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion. McTominay also came on in the opening-day win over Fulham.
There remains confidence from both United and PSG that a deal can finally be agreed for Ugarte. The French champions want to recoup the €60 million they committed last year to sign the 23-year-old from Sporting.
So far United have indicated they only want to pay €50 million. They have been offered the chance to sign the Uruguayan international on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy, but would prefer a permanent transfer for the defensive midfielder. Talks may go down to deadline day, but it is expected a deal will eventually be agreed with Ugarte no longer part of PSG’s plans, having been omitted from their match-day squad.
